Chestnut Hill Realty & Hope in Bloom Create Garden for Needham Resident Living With Breast Cancer

CHR’s Director of Horticulture Tim Dolan Designs Garden While Company Provides Material and Volunteers for Installation

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. –Chestnut Hill Realty, a full-service real estate company specializing in multifamily housing, helped bring the zest and beauty of spring to a local woman living with breast cancer.

The company partnered with Hope in Bloom, a Dedham, based non-profit group that provides indoor or outdoor gardens at no charge to Massachusetts’ residents undergoing treatment for breast cancer. Gardens are planted at individual’s homes and are designed to fit each person’s space, taste and lifestyle.

On Monday, May 7, volunteers from Chestnut Hill Realty and Hope in Bloom planted a garden at the home of Sandy Swartz at 3 Woods End in Needham. This is the 112th Hope in Bloom garden and the first to be installed in Needham. It was designed by Chestnut Hill Realty Director of Horticulture, Tim Dolan. Mr. Dolan also coordinated the installation of the garden. The group also conducted a spring yard clean-up by weeding, edging and transplanting some existing greenery.

While the Hope in Bloom program typically covers the materials and relies on volunteer labor to design and install its gardens, in this case Chestnut Hill Realty provided the mulch, soil, loam and seeds.

“The medical community confirms emotional and physical health are linked,” said Roberta Hershon, founder of Hope in Bloom. “Our gardens provide patients with a beautiful place to experience the calming effects of nature, which studies show increases serotonin, boosts energy levels and wards off depression. Patients who can work in their gardens also receive beneficial exercise. All these factors place patients in a better frame of mind to be more receptive to medical intervention. We are grateful to Chestnut Hill Realty for their support, hard work and assistance in changing Sandy’s landscape.”

Chestnut Hill Realty and its horticultural staff have long been believers in the restorative powers of gardens and blooming flowers. CHR contributed material and labor toward the creation of the Cancer Garden for Hope in Boston’s City Hall Plaza, designed, installed and maintains a rooftop garden at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, and has done volunteer work for Green Care for Troops, a national program that helps the families of deployed soldiers keep up with lawn care.

“Combining something I love like designing a scenic garden with a project that bestows hope is as good as it gets,” said Mr. Dolan, CHR’s Horticultural Director. “I am always proud to be part of a company like Chestnut Hill Realty that continually supports great causes and works to make our local communities stronger and better places to live.”
