Senator Marian Walsh, Chestnut Hill Realty and DCR Partner to Restore Holy Name Rotary
VFW Parkway Project Dedicated to Memory of Fallen Fire Fighter George J. Gottwald

WEST ROXBURY, MA – 18 October 2006 – In a demonstration of public and private sector partnership that will not only beautify a well-traveled roadway but also honor a fallen hero, Senator Marian Walsh (D-West Roxbury), Chestnut Hill Realty and the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) announced today that they are collaborating to restore and maintain the Holy Name Rotary and surrounding West Roxbury Parkway.

Work is currently underway, and scheduled for completion in spring 2007. The landscape improvement project will reintroduce some of the original concepts and plant selections used in the original 1939 Metropolitan District Commission (MDC) landscape plan while integrating some of Chestnut Hill Realty’s unique design ideas. In this way, the newly designed greenways will honor the past while adding intelligent design which incorporates hearty ornamental plantings and trees to provide beauty year round, decrease road noise, and minimize maintenance for future generations.

“We approached Mr. Edward Zuker of Chestnut Hill Realty about contributing their expertise and ongoing support for this project and he couldn’t have been more gracious,” said Senator Walsh. “The company has continued to distinguish itself as a good neighbor, first by volunteering to maintain the center island landscaping on VFW Parkway from South Street to Corey Street, and now promising their time and talents to restore and maintain the Holy Name Rotary.”

The ambitious restoration project is dedicated to fire Lieutenant George J. Gottwald of Engine Company 13, who died of injuries he received during a three alarm fire in West Roxbury on March 3, 1970. A rededication ceremony is being organized for spring 2007, date to be announced.
